I gave the inner nut one last try today after a "cooling off period" (pun intended). I guess the politicians are right because the nut came off with less resistance (though it's still too tight). Now I'll be able to use Paul's thread chaser much more easily. The odd thing is the threads look really good, until you try to put the nut on. Go figure.
