Maybe find the guy who has one of those beat-up logging cats and sell him yours to swap the blade and belly pans onto. That's my plan with a pair of D6s I bought recently. One's a tight, sweet-running farm cat with a Wheatland cab, and the other is a tired old logging cat with a blade, belly pans and a winch (strange 2-drum winch for pulling a scraper, but a 1-drum logging winch came with the deal). Plan for next summer is to make one good one out of the two.

It's amazing to think of all the roads that were built in the '40s and '50s by straight-blade cable-rigged cats, often across hillsides as steep as a cow's face. No reaching out 30' in front of you with an excavator back then. Those old-time cat skinners had balls of steel for sure. My grandpa warned me the real danger is going up a steep hill and deciding to go over a little log rather than cut it or push it out of the way. he said it didn't take much of a log to flip you. I took his word for it.
