ADVANCE or RETARD.. WHICH WAY TO TURN!!!

I want to try playing with the timing now. I think I am getting confused with the terminology used by various contributors here.

I am at or near TDC currently.

I read earlier one fellow suggested adjusting my timing to 4-6 degrees BEFORE TDC.

Is that whats called RETARDING the distro?AND spinning the Distro to the left, or toward the radiator, in the counterclockwise direction, isnt it?

Now someone wrote they run ADVANCED? that would be past TDC, correct? Like spining the distro to the right, or clockwise direction, yes?
