In my old copy of Kent's Mechanical Engineer's Handbook from the 1930s, 87 Octane was "fighting grade aviation gas". They had "training grade" av gas that was lower, and ordinary pump gas was in the 60s. I think the table had "casing-head", "straight run", and "cracked" or something like that.
