I think this is the confirmation I needed:

0.035" gap with the 12 Volt system.

Ill try this and see if I get any more power in the high end, higher reving stages

I am in what call the "debugging" stage of a freshly rebuilt truck. a 41 dodge WC12

MY specs on this truck.

I didnt have the original motor, but found a freshly rebuilt P23 code Plymouth car engine. Engine cylinders were relined and the pistons at stock size. No overbore (if any of this matters)

I have the mechanical advance distributor from a PW installed, eliminating the vacuum advance module.

I run a 12 volt system.
Wiring Is BASIC... power to ignition switch to Coil.

everything is new, Coil, points,. condensor, solid core copper ignition wires, spark plugs, carb (a Rock auto fresh rebuild carb) brand new fuel pump.

everything new. I did a vacuum test the other day and it was steady 20 lbs. No flickering of the needle in any way, indicating excellent valves and seating.

So, I finally get the truck registered this week and have been slowly venturing further and further away from the house, on short runs.

Yesterday finally got the nerve to take it out on the highway , to bring to full speed.

I noticed not a lot of power at higher speeds.

This is why the question of the gap came up...

but another thing happened..

running along fine, then, An occasional "miss" or stumble. Happened two or three times in the course of a few mile run. oh about 40-45 mph maybe.

No incline. No acceleration. No deceleration. No turns. no bumps. this is a paved highway. nothing. just going straight and steady throttle, then all of a sudden the "miss" or "stumble" happens.. takes me by surprise when it happens.

Now I need to get to the bottom of this as I need to get comfortable driving this far from home! A lot of roads around me have little to no traffic. and sometime very little cell phone coverage! I need this dependable!

SO, I will try the point gap to 0.035" today and go for another run.

BUT.. I am thinking this "miss" or stumble is caused by something else.

Any ideas where to look next?

I once had a truck do this, on a sharp turn, occasionally.. turned out out was a frayed ignition wire rubbing against the block when the truck weight during the turn forced it just that slight amount to make the wire ground out..

My experience is very much like this one. Just like it wants to die, for a very short split second, and then recover.
But my wires are brand new..

One note. since newly started, I have ALWAYS needed to choke slightly this carb for it to run smooth. If I dont, the truck does not idle smoothly at all.

Is the jet too small? is the float level perhaps too low, or too high, from the factory?

any experince with this particular problem I would welcome any thoughts!
