There are two ratings, GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) and GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating).

The GVW on my 70 W300 is 5960lbs
The GVWR is 10000lbs which means even though it's a 1 ton by the model designation, technically I should be able to load 4040lbs. Then there's the GVWR of the individual axles which would dictate the weight distribution.
