I don't think there'd be any big problem, but like most things bureaucratic you want to design the transaction to look as simple and ordinary as possible to the customs man. A huge amount of cross-border trade goes on every day without any trouble. For construction equipment you probably only need a bill of sale from the seller since these things aren't usually titled. You will no doubt be taxed on whatever amount is on the bill of sale so keep that in mind, if you know what I mean. Also, something to think about is that it's much easier to bring your own property "back into" the USA than something you bought in Canada. I knew of someone who had to bring a truckload of her mother's property into the US from Canada after the mother died. This could have been a big hassle since 1) the estate hadn't been probated and wasn't likely to be any time soon, and 2) if the stuff wasn't inherited, then it was probably purchased and they'd want duty paid on it. As it was, she told the customs man that she was bringing back some items she'd lent her mom, and he let her through with no trouble. Obviously whatever you plan to do, call customs ahead of time and see what they want you to do. You might want to check the Canadian trucking regs regarding your trailer before you go.
