There are different styles of 727 tailshaft, you need the short one I believe.
Sounds like you are losing the forward clutch pack (engaged in reverse and high). A very complete kit is about $70. A good manual is about $15. Have a look at www.naparts.com online catalog. A rebuild is not that hard to do yourself on this trans. You'll need a slide hammer, snap ring pliers, access to a press (arbor or whatever) for loading a spring to remove a snap ring. The rest is just nuts and bolts, and keeping track of where things came from.
