The 9-5/8 is a bigger stronger carrier than the 8-3/4 used in 1/2 ton MV's You can swap the two unit between trucks. The 8-3/4 uses the 4.89 gearing while the 9-5/8 normally is 5.83, but there are 4.89 gears for it also. Using the 1/2 MV pumpkin is cheaper (junk yards) than buying a set of 4.89 and regearing the 9-5/8, but keep in mind it is also weaker and more so if using V8 power. There is a 1/16 difference in axle center line between the two based on size. The 9-5/8 has to use a spacer to place the pumpkin forward when mounted in the housing to align the axles correctly in a 1/2 ton MV. Otherwise they will stress where bolted at the hub and eventually break. The 8-3/4 requires machining 1/16 off of the mounting surface to align the axles properly. Either case requires some work and money. The better dollar value is going with the 9-5/8 and 4.89. That is the strongest of the gear sets, mounted in the stronger carrier.
