If it's like my early WDX, one wire is empty to 1/2 and the other is 1/2 to full. Ground is through the chassis. As I understand it, your gauge could have an open winding on the 1/2-full side of the gauge, the sending unit, or the wire corresponding wire to the sender could be faulty.
