A W300 with 4.88 gears and a smallblock 318 has its power band around 2400-2600 rpms, so that is where you want to cruise at. I will give rpms for the following tire sizes, but you must realize that a 33" tire does not measure 33". There are some rare cases like some of the swampers. If you want to know the true size of your tire, measure from the center of your hub to the ground on a flat surface and multiply by 2. I have 33" radials and they are probably 31" tires for the sake of this discussion. My truck does 55 but is more comfortable for all at 50 mph. At 55 mph with 4.88 gears you will run the folling rpms with the following TRUE TIRE DIAMETERS: 33"=2734, 35"=2578, 37"=2438, and 38"=2374. So you see the 37" tire that is taken off of a hummer I mentioned is a good fit for me as I do not plan on interstate travel. When you up the ante to 65 mph, you need to go with Charlies recommendation and go to a 38" tire or larger. At 65 mph: 33"=3231, 35"=3046, 37"=2882, and 38"=2806 rpms. I do not have the physics degree and all the experience that Charlie has, but I have worked for Dana Corporation as a Maintenance Supervisor for years and have owned many old Dodges and Binders. This is pretty basic stuff, and I am glad to help anyone who has not been exposed to gearing issues. Share the knowledge!
