HI Dave:

My 1968 W300 with the LA-318 V-8, 4.88 geared Dana 70 axles, and 11.00-16 Michelin tires crusies at 65-70 on flat midwestern Intrestate highways pulling a loaded trailer that weights about 8,000 lbs. Top speed on level ground with these larger tires is fine, so if you top out at 45-50 on the flats, keep the 4.88 and get larger tires.

My W300 lacks the power to maintain speed going up hills (no problem coming down hills, however, my brakes see to that :>). Without any trailer, grades and hills appreciatbly slow down my W300; crossing the Rocky Mountains makes it gasp and crawl. A strong headwind really slows it down, too, even on flat land. It has a large profile to push through the air.

If you can zip up local hills with your present small tires, get larger tires. If hills now slow you down with your small tires, then you probably have a very tired engine.
