Howdy,
I've had experience with both old and new Power Wagons. I've had a '77 PW for many years. Mine has the 440 cu" motor and the auto trans / full-time transfer. It has been a tough truck that I beat around a great deal. Originally a half ton, the front axle has always been the weak point. The motor and trans are a great combination of power and reliability.
I've also got a '63 M-37. It is hard to put the old trucks in the same class as the newer ones. The brute strength of the old style Power Wagon is beyond compare. They are built to be reliable and to withstand the worst environments in the world. They were not built to run down the highway in comfort for hours; they were built for the battlefield.
The newer trucks are great for a daily driver in our modern world and they can work harder than most other trucks of their vintage. For an all-out trail thumper and off-road workhorse, look to the old style Power Wagon.
