I happen to be very familiar with the steel industry in the US. The biggest problem for these large integrated mill companies is that they have too much overhead and their antiquated production technology is no longer competitive. New mini-mill technology such as that employed by Nucor(#2 steel producer in the world) and Ameristeel are much more efficient and cost effective. Though, the steel industry as a whole has been hurt by imported steel, the integrated mills have fallen due to inefficient practices.
