Piston engine aircraft use them. In race applications no battery or alternator needed. I of course have both on mine but battery is for starting & alt runs any accessories. Mags fire hotter as RPMs increase. Points last much longer than in distributors, I've never changed mine. I wouldn't necessarily go buy one today, but I definitely wouldn't take anything for mine.
