An actual fuse seems like a better idea to me, but what do I know? I'm just an electrical engineer and we're often accused of "over-thinking" things.
Maybe the fuse-less ignition circuit is a relic of the M37 engineering. The only circuit in an M37 that doesn't have a breaker is the ignition circuit, on the theory that if anything goes wrong with the ignition, you're dead meat anyway, and eliminating a breaker eliminates one more thing to go wrong.
