I thought of that. Since the temporary ground for the tach had come loose, perhaps its innards got fried and it was shorted to B+. But that can't be the case because the thin light-gauge wires to the tach are fine, whereas the heavy OEM wire from coil to dist burned up within a few seconds.

Even a short to ground inside the coil should have heated up the ballast resistor rather than burning the coil-dist wire.

Thanks for the tip on the accessory position, but my switch doesn't have that. It may not be the stock switch, even though the keys that came with it were Mopar. I like to listen to the radio and use the cig lighter (added) with the truck not running, so that's a good reason to replace the ignition switch with a 4-position one at some point. For now, though, it's just "off", "ign", and "start".
