The axle is supposed to break before the diff.
Just so you can still get back home.
Or in our trucks' case, back to the base.


And Chris, I don't think the axle splines weren't cut on a mill. They were most likely hobbed. Nowadays they're rolled. Which compresses the metal into the root, making the shaft even stronger..
