When I was taking out the old rotten ones, I tried to be very careful and not drop the little plate. I did not drop one until I started trying to insert the new ones with my old plates. As mentioned, the new holes did not line up--so I used a hole punch that was almost twice the size of the new rubber holes, using a pre-1981 penny to punch against and made some wiggle room. After dropping the second plate into darkness, I made two plates out of scrap, tapping in the threads to match the original thread. I really did not get the hang of it until the last one--2nd truck, 8th rubber!
PS Real copper left our pennies in 1982.
