Also make sure you ground the sender to the gage metal just to make sure that is not giving you trouble. 6 and 12 volt fuel gages work different and are wired different. I think there is 3 types of them you can use. When you use the resistor for 12 volts on the 6 volt one it works cause the gage and sending unit match. Using a 12 volt sending unit on a 6 volt gage may have a different ohm reading when you put a resistor on it you change everything. I finely just went with a complete 12 volt set up on both. You can buy a 12 volt dodge gage off ebay that fit in the old housing. It has some gold color but you can paint it black later.
