Hi Mark,
I think maybe I'm creating confusion :)
1994 was the first year of the coil spring suspension & the first year of designing our trucks more for comfort than for strength. The coil springs in the front of the 1994 truck make for a much better ride but they'd be the last thing I'd ever want in a Power Wagon.
Bottom line...a 1994-1998 12 valve is a way better engine than an 89-93. The nv4500 is worlds better than the getrag. End of story. There's no other parts on that truck that I'd use in a vintage truck diesel conversion.
But, what I'm getting at is that the power plant out of a second gen dodge can be had for only a few hundred dollars more than buying first gen components which aren't in the same league....especially the transmission.
All that said...id never change the chassis on a power wagon in the process of converting it...it ends up as hoaky as installing a modern interior.
