Think it depends how much air is applied how quickly? If the air is added to build pressure over a small time, it should work as well as any of the "new" switch systems. I have a 18 month old Nissan with the rotary switch on the dash and it takes a little time for everything to click into place - like allowing it to feel it's way, and I've also had to back up a little to get out of low 4x4 on some occasions.
