Could be interference from the ignition or from the generator, but either way a filter on the lead to the radio is the fix. Modern radios are too clever for their own good, with their computerized automatic innards, and they tend to prefer shutting off the audio entirely rather than passing it through with static added. But definitely also make sure you have a good ground from the radio chassis to vehicle body, because if you just rely on a grounded wire somewhere in the wiring harness that goes back to ground somewhere far away, that's not very good. For what it's worth, I put a modern computerized radio in my '61 D300 and have had no issues.
