I'm sure the day is coming when the big tract-house contractors will have some kind of on-site CNC laser cutter or something, where they just stack a unit of 2x4s or 2x6s at one end of the machine, insert a CAD file, and the thing spits outs studs, rafters, and joists, each one unique if need be, to make whatever the architect sketched up on his laptop back in the coffee house. All that'll be left for the Mexicans to do is tack them together with a nail gun and staple the pre-cut pieces of OSB over them. Already the M.E. students crank out their "shop" projects on a 3D printer rather than a lathe and a mill. It's a brave new world.
