Most of my best things are things that were given to me by someone I knew, often but not always when they died. Tools carry a lot of history with them. My only knowledge of my great-great grandfather is from some chisels and planes and a drawknives that have his initial's stamped in them. He was a cabinetmaker in San Francisco around 1870-1890 and most of his tools were made in Sheffield. I broke one when I was young and stupid, but now I take good care of them and save them for the best work. Everything is better when you have a human story to go with it. I've never understood collecting "antiques" just for their own sake. The only problem these days is that the tools I'm "inheriting" are coming from guys who are closer and closer to my own age.
