I am not a big fan of either method. The set screw can damage the cable to a point where it could fail later, and the u-bolt could also do the same. It's too bad that Braden did not design the drum with an angled hole through the side so the end of the cable could terminate and be firmly clamped with one of various methods to the outside face of the drum. With that said, I prefer the u-bolt method over the set screw as it gives you more options. You could terminate the end of the cable with a ferrule, a Flemish Eye, or some other method that would control the loose strands while enlarging the diameter so it would not pull through the u-bolt, without the need to tighten the u-bolt excessively to the point that it would damage the cable. Of course, any of these options would probably create an even bigger "knot" that successive layers of cable would have to lay over. At the very least the u-bolt allows checking of the tightness of the nuts while the cable is on the drum. With the setscrew, one would have to pay out the cable to check the tightness of the screw.
