I like simple and metal, checkerplate curved to match the bed sides, couple hinges on the bottom and a couple latches top sides, chains to stop it dropping too far, or unhook them to drop it right down. You already have a couple D rings there that could become hinges, use same construction as rest of bed. make it as high as you need and put on a tie rail like on the sides. I would probably stop the top edge level with the last tie-rail supports and mount the new tie-rail above that.
