Rebuilding my D4 pony motor and noticed the pistons had already been knurled very lightly. Compression was poor but cylinders and crank aren't scored, valves aren't burned, and rings aren't broken so hoping I can get by with what I can do in my own shop. Main bearings were totally shot, which is why I'm into it. They're aluminum cylinders so I'm thinking I can turn some myself to match the crank as-is. Crank is already too small for the under-size mains in the cat book. Have not plastigaged the rod bearings yet. If the rod journals are too worn, I may well just shim the bearing shells like some of the old-timers used to do, since this is an old-time machine and I doubt I'll put more than 10 hours on the pony the rest of my life. Valves seem to be the biggest problem, with clearances measured from .0015 to .017 (should be .010). Hoping I can just tighten up the seats by lapping them in place, and "adjust" them as they describe by grinding the end of the stem (!). I have a few valves out of a junk pony I can also play with.

But on the piston knurling, I'm wondering whether this is something I can realistically do myself on my bench lathe with an ordinary knurling tool. Not even sure how you'd properly mount and center a piston for knurling.
