Old days engine reconditioning steps:
1. Use non-detergent oil
2. Use heavier oil
3. Add thickener to oil (STP, sawdust, etc)
4. Valve job
5. Valve job and new rigs
6. Valve job, new rings and knurled pistons
7. Short block
8. Long block
I venture to say there are about as many guys today who remember these things as there are who remember pay phones, rotary dials, or cranks on the side of the phone.
