I really doesn't matter what you think or how you justify yourself. What you did was not safe and not legal. Washington state requires operational brakes on towed vehicles that exceed 3,000 lbs. The only state that does not require operational brakes on the towed vehicle is Missouri.

You could have easily been in the same situation as you commented on above. I have seen too many accidents where the towed load has pushed the tow vehicle all over the place resulting in jack knifes and roll overs or crammed into the ditch. I had one jack knife and roll over right in front of me in the opposing lane. If you are found with non-compliant or non-operational equipment the lawyers for the injured party will empty your wallet for the rest of your life. Yes, you thought you were being safe, but you risked other people's lives and property. We had this conversation many years ago just before you left Everett to head over Stevens Pass. Enough said.
