The spammers somehow get a copy of someone's email address book, or even just a copy of an email somebody send with a long "cc" list. Then they make up their spams and send them out with some random email address that they harvested that way stuck in the "from" field. When you get spam emails "from" somebody you know, you can be almost sure that their computer isn't infected with anything and all that happened is that some spammer/hacker found your email address and theirs in the same address book on somebody else's computer. It could even be some naive or crooked flunkie at some company that you both bought something from.

I've seen more than one friend grovel and apologize profusely and wipe out everything on their computer and re-load it, thinking that their computer really did send out the spams, when in fact they had nothing to do with it. In my experience, these things run their course in a few weeks with no great harm done.
