Even the dip stick says "do NOT add unless below that line". you're being OCD, and picking on sonny boy for no reason. He can't be that much of a buffoon, look where he got his genes. ;^) My guess is Junior knew he gets 800 mpqt, and since he only drove 300 miles, he's good for the return trip.
Though I suppose it goes back to when the cardboard cans we not recap-able, and the left over 1/2 qt would just get spilled in the trunk. And they did not want you adding a whole quart, resuklting in an overfill of 1/2gt.
