Probably the only time you will have to winch backwards will be when the truck is mired in mud, snow or deep water, which will make it almost impossible to do this.
I got stuck going uphill in snow up to my hood one time. Fortunately there were lots of trees on each side of the road. I kept hooking to different trees and literally turned the truck 180 degrees. It pivoted on the packed snow under the tires. But don't try that in mud or you will be breaking anything weaker than the chain or the cable.
