It's not a bad idea if it's done properly. A lot of your inner axle parts have epoxy primer on them from the factory, but no paint. I've seen axle shafts and open type differentials with red oxide epoxy primer on them and it does not come off as long as it's prepped right. No different than people using Glyptol to paint the inside of engine crankcases.
I wouldn't see any harm in it, think I might choose a different color.....
