There's a shaft in there with a square hole for the cable, these can sometimes get stripped out of square from wear and maybe a stuck cable at some time, also the end of the cable can get the shoulders of the square drive rounded off - all this stops the speedo working. I've also found the shaft with the square hole and little gear on the other end of it totally missing.
