The truck that Horvath had to wear ear plugs in had a second series non-syncro transmission. Upon tear down it looked ok but the gear teeth felt sharp. That transmission was removed and used as a ballast. Another was installed from the parts emporium and the noise is much better. I would hesitate to call it quiet, but that is another issue for another time.

All of the vehicles that I have been in with 420's installed are quiet relatively speaking. For a bit of clarity, the transmissions were quiet enough to hear other noises. Things like the transfer case / rear end, and the flathead engine screaming to maintain speed. In most cases if you're lucky and listen carefully you can almost hear the tires at 50mph.

A gear whine may just be the nature of the beast, a howl is likely a cry for help.
