The machine shop that installed the core plugs didn't dimple them and I didn't know enough to catch that, and one of the popped out on the maiden voyage after the rebuild. Without any coolant in the block, the temperature gage didn't register the overheat condition for a while, and before I realized it, the engine had gotten hot enough to crack the head. I was extra-careful to go through all of the other core plugs, even those in hard-to-reach places, and make sure they were properly seated.
