Today's generation has it easier in a lot of ways. There are also new challenges.
The hard fought accomplishment of previous generations gives us the luxury to tackle new challenges. I know sometimes people get down, because they see how easy it could be for our accomplishments to slip away. It's scary to think about society going backward, and each faction sees a different catastrophe lying in wait. The reality is, life and humanity on this planet has never been better than it is today. If I look at how we have steadily improved so much, it gives me confidence that we can continue that trend. It will take work, and there will always be risks.
We probably won't come to ruin because people are lazy. The unproductive lot may be a parasites on society, but lazy parasites will never have the power to take down the beast. There will always be people working hard to get ahead. I most fear the ambitious cheats. I fear those that lie to the masses in order to gain power for their narrow self interest. Those who seek to concentrate power for themselves are the ones to watch out for. In most of our great conflicts, the US claimed to be freeing the helpless from the tyrants.
