I use dishwasher detergent in my 'soup' - about 1/2 cup for a 20 gal trash can. It has lye in it, which helps a little with the process. The additive only helps to get the process started. Once it's going, the water is full of iron molecules and conducts quite nicely.

I've seen where guys have set up large tarps and plywood sides to dip trailer frames. You could use the same idea to hold fenders, hoods, or whole cabs. The higher the walls, the more static pressure you have at the base, and the greater the chance of a blow-out.
