The problem with air straight from a compressor is that there's moisture in it...lots of it & unless you have a proper dryer installed for several thousand dollars, it's just like your compressor tank. You can drain your tank but there's still moisture inside the tank & in fact if you could look inside the tank...its wet. That's why a paint job without a dryer will fail, blister etc..water is coming out with whatever you're spraying.
In the case of a tire, it's like your air tank but with no drain & sealed tight so forget about it ever drying. The beads are made of various different material but the water causes them to clump & they say they won't spread in your tire as they should.
Evidently it's a big enough issue that every brand I've ever bought mention it in their instructions & so I'm guessing they've had issues with wet air.
Basically I don't know any body shop who'd charge for a shot of air so why not put in the best dry air possible, me thinks.
