And the darn thing lacked that spring that you need to compress to move the lever sideways into reverse. Turned out to have been the c-clip that retains that plunger and spring. It had been 'through the wringer'. Good old sloppy trans and soft iron c-clip, no harm done. Plunger and sporing were still in place, thankfully.
