Wow, talk about dodging the question

I read the whole Tire Ageing and Service Life, NTSB Tire Safety Symposium .pdf that Doc Dave shared.

Todd and others have some valid questions and this .pdf, in typical government fashion, does not answer them. What I personally gather from all this is that tire manufactures and tire experts really have no clue why 6 years is the magical lifespan of a radial tire, why radial tires appear to be inherently inferior in quality to bias ply tires, and what the differences are in construction and/or rubber compounds used between radial and bias ply that causes such a difference between the two.

Or, they do they actually know but just don't want the rest of us to know. Knowledge is power it has been said.

What really did jump out at me was this quote from the .pdf:

"Tire makers don't expect tires to be in regular use after 6 to 8 years after manufacture--"so some of these car tyres
probably did not have sufficient special additives to remain supple for such a long life."

Could that quote be conjecture or an actual hint that the radial tire manufactures are purposely limiting the life span of their tires simply as a goal to increase sales?

I have never entertained any plans to run radials on any of my Power-Wagons. But I can understand why the refusal of others to answer the valid questions can cause anger here. Following the flock and taking someone's word is not the same thing as basing a decision upon facts, clear explanations, and scientific reasons. If lives are at stake, I feel those who want to know deserve an explanation of "why", not just a "trust us because we are the experts" attitude.
