For those not familiar with the "lock o matic" hubs, ( AKA RED insert) They appear to look like regular warn hubs except the center of the knob is painted RED and says 'lock o matic' These hubs were optional and if you are spinning a rear wheel and engage your front axle drive they will automatically engage while there is forward drive pressure, once you are in good traction again, just back up slightly and they will release! This happens when the knob is in the FREE position! So that is why they say to manually engage hubs if pulling hard or decelerationg thus the hubs wont be cycling a lot. They have excentric pins that will engage under rotation then are spring loaded to release, the manual 'lock' sets the hub into a full time lock position like the standard (or BLACK insert hubs). They work well, my 67 W200 has them from the factory and I have found a set for my PW.
