My 1969 Cobra is based on the Fairlane body. This was to get the Cobra name into NASCAR.

The Talladega was derived from the Cobra (and many early Talladegas had Cobra painted on them in NASCAR) by extending the nose. The Talladegas beat up the winged MOPARS. The Cobras, due to the nose, did better on the short tracks.

The NASCAR Cobras (and Taladegas) usually ran either a 427 Tunnel Port, 427 Medium Riser or a Boss 429. The factory Cobras and Talladegas ran a 428 Cobra Jet or an optional 428 Super Cobra Jet was available for the Cobra.

I have an NOS 427 Side-Oiler, with Medium Riser heads, steel LeMans crank, LeMans rods, factory "Tunnel Wedge" dual quad single plane intake. Accessories include a rare NOS Pete Jackson gear drive (not made in over 20 years). I have factory pistons, but they are 12.5:1 and obviously that is too much these days for anything short of racing fuel or av gas. Will either mill the popup down or will replace them. Will probably not run the C8AX "Stripper" cam, which is a 330 duration, .660 lift. This combo made well over 550 HP in the old days, but the fuel situation today dictates going to Plan B. Also not sure if the original Holley 632 CFM carbs are made repro.

The old engine was a standard 428 Cobra Jet with a 427 cam - 304 intake - 314 exh - .586 lift. I advanced the cam four degrees and made huge amounts of torque off the line. Compression was 11:1. Ran 3.50 gears in a posi on the street behind a manual valve bodied C-6 automatic, and could burn both tires at will in any gear at any speed, which is not easy to do with an automatic and that gear ratio. Wheel wells were always full of rubber shards hanging down, and melted rubber bits were always all over the quarter panels.

Ah, the good old days. Maybe after the M37 is done I'll get around to putting the Cobra back on the road.
