Y blocks have a "skirt" that extends below the centerline of the crankshaft. Ford also made such a block in the mid 50's and then used it in their light trucks into the mid 60's. 272, 292, 312. These blocks tend to be heavier and were touted to have stronger bottom ends because of better main bearing support. Actually, I thing the newer blocks are even stronger due to better webbing design and they have the advantage of being lighter.
