Split rims are the type which has two pieces:
Most of the wheel is one piece, including the center and back half.
The front has a ring with a cut in it which can be separated from the rest of the wheel with a couple of tire irons.
It is that front ring which, if handled carelessly, can come off the other piece with potentially deadly velocity.
