I used to have the same charging problem. What i did was install a series- parrallel switch from J.C.WHITNEY. $59.95. this product is designed to put 24v to any vehicle after adding a second battery. Push a button on the dash and hold in for 24v and the 24v goes to whatever you have wired to it. leave go and have 12v to everything else. I also went with a ac-delco (1) wire alternator. Just wire it up with the one wire and it charges both batteries. I use the signal stat turn signal switch like used in large trucks. this system has worked great for over a year now. has never left me stranded. of course the complete new wiring of everything to 12v except the starter probably helped most of all. also running civilian 12v distributor etc.,etc. 52 M37.hope this helps.
