As Joe said, you'll end up with a firmer ride if you add leaves.

However, in Charlie's case, adding an extra leaf or two might be just the ticket because of the extra unsprung weight up front in his diesel/winch-equipped rig. When you make up for extra spring stiffness with extra unsprung mass (or vice-versa), it tends to make the stiffened springs react more like stock springs with a stock amount of unsprung weight.

If you're not adding extra weight, I'd have the springs re-arched, rather than adding leaves. There are lots of places that can do this quite effectively.

Besides, it's a good idea for all of the leaves to have a similar arc, since it helps distribute the loading more evenly and it makes the reaction curve smoother.
