Hi David,

The speedometer cable attaches to a small shaft at the rear output shaft housing on the transfer case.

The oil filter is apparently missing. Find a used one with all of the mounting hardware, get new hoses, and reinstall it.

The stock heater goes on the left front fender. Yes, on the fender. There is both a hot-water type and a gasoline-fired type available. These are still available NOS, but not cheap, figure 300 to 400 dollars, but there's quite a bit to them. Maybe you can find a used setup for less money, but make sure the core doesn't leak.

A lot of people adapt heaters from other vehicles and mount them under the dashboard, but IF you want "original," then you'll have to use the fender-mount type. If you look closely at the fender and the adjacent sheet metal panels, you'll notice some "knock-outs." These partially-punched holes are designed to be knocked out to accommodate the mounting bolts, hoses, and duct.

The steering knuckles (what you called the 'stub axles' have to be removed from the flange assembly. There is a bronze bushing inside the knuckle that is often worn and in need of replacement. There is an oil seal behind a second bronze bushing in the main axle tube that keeps the axle's gear lube from entering the flange assembly and diluting the grease for the universal drive joint in the flange assembly. These have to be pulled, then pressed/driven in.

DO NOT attempt to rebuild the front end without a technical manual. There are some important preload adjustments that must be made on the upper and lower flange bearings. They're not hard to do, but you have to do things in the correct order and to the correct specs.

If you're driving this rig home for the first time, AVOID the freeway, test the brakes often, and have someone follow you (or go ahead of you) in case you break down.

Get the minimum number of basic technical manuals for the beast:

TM 9-8030 (Operation and Organizational Maintenance)
TM 9-8031-2 (Power Train, Body, and Frame)
TM 9-1840A (Engine and Clutch)

These manuals aren't dirt cheap, but they will save you many hours of frustration and might also help you avoid accidentally destroying or damaging an assembly.

They are available from several different parts sources.

Alan
