It sounds like you have two problems; 1st, the adjustment is not disengaging properly, or "you can't push the pedal in far enough to do good". As noted, try adjusting it. 2nd, the popping out of gear is natures' way of telling you your transmission is sick. Most of them pop out of 3rd when aged, but if 1st is the problem, I think the first-reverse shaft may have excessive wear. Sometimes this is caused by towing and turning everything unoiled in a B1 trans, but who knows what has happened in the past. You may find a good take-out trans cheaper in the long run, even with rebuilding the old one using surplus priced right. Another area catching a lot of owners is the PTO. If yours has one, it needs to have a degree of free play in the teeth engagement, and invariably this requires the stacking up of gaskets when mounting it. One is seldom enough, and can cause a binding side load problem. Good luck, DGilliam.
